The ranch

A working ranch, first.

The land

Vineyard on the flats, oaks on the slopes, and a ridge that looks over all of it.

The drive in runs past vineyard rows and climbs into oak savanna. Horses graze the paddocks, the arena is in use, and the trails get ridden. Sandy Creek Ranch is a working property, which is exactly why it does not feel like a venue.

From the ridge above the estate, the land falls away in every direction, hills folding into hills with almost nothing built in between.

The history

Named for the creek that runs down the valley.

In 1881, the first history of Monterey County described Indian Valley as one of a handful of “beautiful little valleys” east of the Salinas River, with “a rich soil” and “a delightful climate.” Nearly all of it was still government land, used for grazing cattle.

The land office in San Francisco sold the ground beneath today’s estate in 1890, and homesteaders took up the hillsides around it through that decade. A post office called Valleton served the valley from 1887 until 1918. When it closed, the mail went to San Miguel, as it still does.

The ranch takes its name from Big Sandy Creek, the wide, sandy wash that runs down Indian Valley. Its livestock brand is an S and a C above a single running line.

Why so few

A short calendar is the point.

Sandy Creek Ranch does not run a season. Keeping the calendar short means the estate is never being reset between celebrations, and every couple receives the property as the family keeps it.

It also means dates are claimed early. Couples with a season in mind are encouraged to write well ahead.

Life at the ranch

Pool, hot tub, gym, pickleball, bocce, riding arena, and miles of trail.

Between the events of a wedding weekend, the estate is simply a very good place to be. Spend the afternoon at the pool, play a game before dinner, ride out through the oaks, and end in the hot tub as the hills go dark.
